Research collaboration
YAKKI teaches English to children who do not have English at home. It is informed by research on language learning, and we want its learning design and accessibility tested independently.
What it is informed by is on the Science page.
Questions we want to study
- Does structured practice help vocabulary, reading or willingness to speak?
- Does dyslexia mode help real learners? This is our most urgent ask. The adaptations follow published guidance; the mode is free of charge and is in development.
- How do learners with different home languages use hints and feedback?
- What can answers, retries and hint use tell us about learning? The learner model they will feed is in development.
We do not present these as settled claims. Answering them takes properly designed studies.
Speech is not assessed: we only give recommendations. Speech can be assessed by a live person — a curator, a tutor or a Studio teacher. To improve pronunciation, we recommend formats with a live person. If your question is about speaking, the study needs its own measure.
What we discuss under a protocol
Depending on the study design: platform access, task configuration, and data collection within an agreed protocol.
The platform records learning activity: answers, retries and hint use. What data is available, how it is handled, and whether it can leave the platform is agreed for each study.
The interface exists in ten languages in the code, but we do not treat every one of them as ready. Ask which ones are available for your sample.
Terms
- We offer: platform access for your design, engineering support for experimental conditions, and direct contact with the team that builds the system.
- We ask: independence. Findings belong to the researcher, including negative ones.
- Publication: no restrictions. We ask only for a factual check of how the platform is described.
Ethics first
Every child uses YAKKI only with a parent’s or guardian’s consent, in every format. There is no anonymous mode.
Any study involving children needs your institution’s ethics approval and informed-consent procedure. We work to the agreed protocol, and no study-specific data collection starts outside it.
