Structured English practice

How to practise English pronunciation clearly

The goal is understandable speech, not erasing an accent. Short cycles of listening, noticing and trying again work for children, teenagers and adults.

Practise one feature at a time

No one can monitor every sound while also thinking about meaning. Choose one target: the last sound in a word, the stressed syllable, a contrast between two words or the rise and fall of a question.

Use a short word or sentence you understand. Meaning comes first: a perfectly repeated sentence is not useful if you do not know what it says.

Use a listen — notice — try loop

First listen without speaking. Then listen again and notice one detail: mouth movement, sound length, stress or intonation. Try it, listen once more and try again.

Comparing two attempts is more useful than calling one “wrong”. Ask what changed and which version was easier to understand. Keep the model short enough to remember as a whole.

  • Listen once for meaning.
  • Listen again for one sound or rhythm feature.
  • Say the word or phrase.
  • Try once more, changing only the chosen feature.

Connect pronunciation with listening and reading

Pronunciation practice also teaches you what to listen for. Match a written word to its sound, mark the stressed syllable, or hear which of two similar words was spoken. A structured level sequence helps organise these skills at any age.

Several focused attempts on different days are more useful than a long session after attention has faded.

A 10-minute pronunciation routine

  1. 2 minutes — Listen to a short model and understand its meaning.
  2. 3 minutes — Notice one sound, stress pattern or change in intonation.
  3. 3 minutes — Make two or three focused attempts.
  4. 2 minutes — Use the word or phrase in a new sentence.

Common questions

Do I need a native accent?

No. The practical goal is speech that other people can understand. An accent is not itself a mistake.

Can an app grade pronunciation?

YAKKI does not grade speech. Speaking activities provide practice and recommendations; a live person can assess speech in context.

What if I do not speak English well?

Use a clear audio model and focus together on one detail. You do not need to demonstrate every sound yourself.
