Comparative Adjectives

Comparing two things: taller, more beautiful, than.

An elephant is bigger than a dog.

Look: bigger than. Big becomes bigger, and after it comes than.

Forms

  • tall → taller — short words: + er
  • big → bigger · nice → nicer · happy → happier — spelling: the last letter doubles in big; after -e just add r; consonant + y becomes -ier
  • beautiful → more beautiful — longer words: more + word
  • good → better · bad → worse — special words
  • bigger than a dog — after the adjective: than
